Theatre Performance

KS4

Why should I study this subject?

Are you an actor, musician or musical theatre performer with a love of all things theatre? Then this is the course for you.

If you choose Theatre Performance, you will have an opportunity to explore a range of performance styles, taking original and existing productions from concept to final performance. After this exploration, you will choose the performance and production discipline which suits you and plays to your individual strengths. The course offers you flexibility and freedom to be who you are, and to design what you produce and perform around what you are good at and enjoy.

What will I study?

In the first stages of the course, you will explore performance in a range of styles, looking at professional, existing works and creating your own performances in response to them. After this, you will take a performance from initial ideas to final production, working on briefs set by the exam board. You can explore these briefs in whichever direction your creativity takes you!

The course is made up of three units:

Unit One: You will create original performance ideas based on your choice of brief. You will research, develop, plan and pitch your ideas as a theatre company or group, going through all stages that a professional theatre company would in the Performing Arts industry. In this unit, you will be asked to create a portfolio of evidence of the process you have gone through to create your performance idea.

Unit Two: You will prepare and stage your own production of existing or original theatre performance, whether that be as an actor, musician or musical theatre performer. You will get to design your production in collaboration with the technical theatre team – looking at set, lighting, sound, costume and make-up design.

Unit Three: You will study all aspects of the Performing Arts industry, including the role of the Performing Arts in our society, available careers, technical elements of theatre and marketing. You will watch and review professional performances, both live on theatre trips and streamed online in school.

How will I be assessed?

In unit one, you will be assessed on a business-style pitch as a theatre company, along with performance extracts to support this. You will also produce a portfolio, evidencing the research, idea development, planning and budgeting that have gone into producing your final performance proposal.

In unit two, you will be assessed on your performance of existing or original work in your chosen discipline (music, drama, musical theatre).

Finally, in unit three, you will undertake a 90-minute examination that assesses your knowledge of the Performing Arts industry, through a range of multiple choice questions, short answers, extended responses and designing / devising questions.

What skills will I learn?

You will develop all key skills that will make you successful in your life, whatever you choose to do in the future:

  • You will show / reveal your creativity when developing ideas.
  • You will be able to perform effectively in your chosen area.
  • You will develop key life skills – confidence, independence, teamwork and collaboration skills, as well as self-discipline, motivation and commitment.

What equipment will I need?

You may be asked to provide items of clothing as costumes for your performance, though this will rarely be at any cost to you (if ever).

If you are a musician, and require an instrument (other than voice or piano), you will need to have your own. School can provide amplifiers and cables, where required.

How will this subject develop my sense of character and culture?

Theatre Performance will help you to become a confident member of society, to celebrate diversity, to achieve your aspirations through creativity and commitment and help you to secure a better understanding of your own values. All this will be achieved through the study of performance from a range of cultures and styles, touching on topics that challenge your perspectives.

Where can this subject take me?

This course will offer a progressive route through to Tech Certificates, Tech Levels, BTEC Level 3, AS and A-levels.

Your teacher will be happy to share knowledge of linked professions with you.
